Day 6 travel to cortona
Today we packed up our belongings and were off to Cortona. On our way we stoped at the Etruscan tombs. They were small huts that sloped down into the ground with shingled roofs. As you walked down into the tomb the walls were carved out of stone and it led you to a small opening underground. Here were the openings to the family cript. They were beautifully painted with decorated ceilings in checkers patterns. A few had circles and a pattern of three almond shaped makes. Many had animals suck as cheetahs, lions, or roosters on the back wall next to the painter center puller that hypetheticly held up the roof. One or two had burial tombs built into the stone with bones or even extensions off to the side for another cript. They were very cool to see but almost upsetting knowing that we have moved the bones and belonging from the tombs. The Etruscans spent the time to build these tombs into the rock underground to burry there loved ones and insted of having the respect to allow there remains to stay were there ancestors left them we took all of there bones and belongings out and put them in museums. I know they are part of history and it's the only way we had to learn about the Etruscans but what if in there beliefs the moving of bones from there final resting place ment that they wouldn't find peace in the afterlife, or the tombs were the homes for there spirits to return to and by moving them they no longer had a place to return and were bound to roam aimlessly forever trying to find there way home. It just makes me wonder and think about how I want to be memorialized or forgotten in my death. After we had seen all the crypts we went to tequinia.... Here we went to the museum for the tombs and saw the artifacts that were taken out of the tombs. There were several clay pots and some really cool pieces of bronze pins and toys. You also got to see the vases that they would have put the bones in and then berried under the ground. It was very cool to see how they had mourned. Then we were headed to lunch. I found a market with fresh spinach and figs which were amazing I had really missed fresh spinach. When we choose a restauran I ordered a glass of wine and the gnocchi with mussels, prons, and clams. I had actually ordered a pitcher of wine on accident instead of a glass but there's bigger problem then having too much wine, plus here a pitcher cost the same amount as a glass in the states so happy lunching to me haha. After a very lovely lunch and a bit of wine I found a bench in the sun and took a tipsy nap while waiting for the group to gather to leave for Cortona. When we arrived it was spectacular. Although the fields were filled with sad sunflowers. Maybe it had just been cold but they weren't as shining as I had hoped them to be. Cortona is beautiful and as we waited for dinner at toninos we had a glass of wine and watched the sun set. It was truly a wonderful view to start out a new home.
